A benchmark is a test used by computer hardware software and application vendors to test the performance of a system. Benchmark are designed so that the same test can be run on a variety of hardware and software platforms. Benchmark usually test a specific function, as they can give only an indication of the system performance in that area.
There are two categories of Benchmark testing (a) Standard and (b) Custom.
The industry standard benchmark typically run by computer hardware or software manufacturer. The custom benchmark is done by end user of integrator. The industry standard benchmark allow computer hardware and software vendors the compare the performance of their system against other system. Custom benchmark is also available for component level testing to know deficiencies and can make improvements. Custom benchmark are also applicable to application software on different modules and functions.
